Why Special?

This page tries to explain why residents of West Hayling believe their area is special and wish to see the character of the area either preserved or enhanced. If Pullingers had succeeded in doubling the housing density on their plot, then potentially a precedent would be set to permit every house in Sinah Lane, St Catherines Road and Staunton Avenue and other roads to have an extra house added in the back garden on their plots.

Sinah Lane, St Catherines Road and Staunton Avenue (and adjacent roads) are roads with many trees and shrubs and with no dense housing developments and two of these roads have been officially classified as being of "Special character".  Do we really want Pullingers to convert the site at 40 St Catherines Road into a miniature housing estate with 50% of the land covered in concrete and tarmac?  Such a proposal would prejudice St Catherines Road attaining Special Character status which is something we are striving for.   Please help us by going to the What You Can Do page.
